Benedict Cumberbatch has publicly stated that he thinks people viewing protagonists in media like Sherlock Holmes as autistic is ‘dangerous’ & ‘lazy’ because it ‘offers false hope’ that autistic people could be ‘brilliant’ or heroic…

so yeah i’m gonna give a pass on his superhero movie, because he doesn’t think people like me deserve heroes, or that we could ever be them.

Oh my god I thought this was made up but it’s real.

I keep seeing people who aren’t autistic in the notes trying to explain what the True Interpretation of his words are. (When you know taking things literally is literally a trait of autism but whatever!)

One of the common points that those people keep making is how harmful it is to say that characters who are so brilliant are also autistic gives us false hope. The vast majority of autistic people can’t tell someone’s life story by looking at their hands so it gives false hope to autistics to ever live up to such brilliance! (Even though Sherlock was based off a real man ACD knew who could do that but whatever!)

By that same logic no one is allowed to ever relate to a superhero ever again unless you can literally shoot laser beams out of your eyes.
